Somatic Trauma Therapy Intensive (Brisbane: 2016-7)

The training is designed to enhance, not replace, skills and knowledge already held by the participants. In the past, practitioners from many disciplines (psychoanalysis, psychodynamic, EMDR, cognitive behavioural, hypnosis, Gestalt, body psychotherapy, TA, etc.) have all found this training to be a complement not a conflict.

The Centre for Mental Health Education is excited to be offering the 12-day intensive courses in trauma therapy which runs over 12 months in Brisbane. This course was developed and led by Babette Rothschild, author of the bestselling The Body Remembers: The Psychophysiology of Trauma and Trauma Treatment. In this training Babette will be assisted by Peter King and Patricia Bourke who will also provide supervision and consultancy to attendees in between each workshop block via our online participant portal.

This course is limited to only 30 participants and enables attendees to meet the education component in becoming a certified Somatic Trauma Therapist.

This Course is now Full!

About the course:

This training is open to psychologists, psychotherapists, counsellors and other health care professionals. All workshops are conducted with a combination of lecture, discussion, exercises, demonstrations, and practice. They will include a review of both traditional and alternative theories of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). This course attracts a total of 100 CPD hours over 12 months!

This training embraces three major goals:

  • First, to make a relevant bridge between trauma theory and trauma practice;
  • Second, to make non-touch somatic tools available to the trauma practitioner;
  • Third, to equip therapists to distinguish and help clients who: 1) are not good candidates for processing trauma memories and 2) those who are good candidates for processing memories.

These goals underlie the principles addressed in The Body Remembers: The Psychophysiology of Trauma and Trauma Treatment, putting into direct practice the tools presented there as well as many others.

The training is grounded in the belief that the therapist working with trauma must become familiar with many theories, techniques, and treatment models to ensure that therapy will always be tailored to the needs of the client. Therefore, it is designed to enhance, not replace, skills and knowledge already held by the participants. In the past, practitioners from many disciplines (psychoanalysis, psychodynamic, EMDR, cognitive behavioural, hypnosis, Gestalt, body psychotherapy, TA, etc.) have all found this training to be a complement not a conflict.

These three 4-day workshops, run between June 2016 and July 2017, review both traditional and alternative theories of PTSD including (but not limited to) those developed by: Bessel van der Kolk, Judith Herman, M.D. at Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA; the Bodynamic Institute, Copenhagen, Denmark; and Peter Levine, Ph.D., Ergos Institute, Boulder, Colorado, USA.
